WT Merges Para-Taekwondo Education

World Taekwondo is making important strides to ensure fairness and encourage. The development of para-taekwondo education can be achieved by combining its educational programs for both able-bodied and para-athletes.

This strategic decision aims to offer a thorough understanding of both disciplines for all interested parties, including officials, coaches, referees, and technical delegates. By standardizing these educational programs, WT intends to promote a cohesive understanding of the rules, techniques, and best practices throughout all Taekwondo events. This unified approach has already been put into practice in several international courses conducted earlier this year.

Para-taekwondo was incorporated into the International Poomsae and Kyorugi Referee Courses in India, as well as the International Referee course and the Technical Delegates course held in Belgium in March 2025. This integration represents a significant transformation in the sport’s educational framework, showcasing WT’s dedication to a comprehensive strategy that will nurture a larger pool of internationally certified officials equipped to officiate in both taekwondo and para-taekwondo competitions.

Understanding the Role of Weapons in Taekwondo

In a concurrent effort to enhance awareness and comprehension of para-taekwondo, WT is initiating a distinctive project this May. A select group of 16 international medical and technical classifiers, representing all five continents, has been chosen for their ingenuity to create engaging awareness materials. These materials will be introduced through WT’s social media platforms, aiming to share the compelling stories of para athletes and promote a better understanding of the classification system in an accessible way.

Dr. Hadwah Moawad, Head of the Classification Committee, emphasized the crucial role of these classifiers in influencing the perception and impact of para-taekwondo on a global scale. Additionally, WT International Classifier and educator Ms. Ashanti Ramirez Montes de Oca has been actively conducting Para Taekwondo awareness discussions throughout Mexico. She recently connected with 180 students at the University Montrer, concentrating on inclusivity in sports and opportunities within para-taekwondo.

In honor of International Women’s Day, Ashanti also addressed 109 young women at CONALEP Tlalpan 1, motivating them to view sports as a means of empowerment. Her outreach extended to the School Safety Directorate in Mexico City, where she spoke to 51 police officers, emphasizing para-taekwondo’s role in education and community development. These efforts reflect WT’s ongoing dedication to enhancing awareness and educating communities globally about para-taekwondo.

In the area of classification, Moawad has reported advancements in the P20 Research Group. Formed in November 2023, the group is committed to creating evidence-based sport class profiles for athletes with intellectual disabilities in para-taekwondo poomsae. This research, employing both cognitive and sport-specific technical test data, is vital for upholding the integrity and credibility of para sports. A team of specialists, led by Dr. Mohammed Hadi Hadizade and Ms. Tunde Szarka, is working to conclude the research and disseminate the findings to improve the classification system for P20 athletes.
