THF Board Gathers to Boost Refugee Sport Initiatives

On June 3rd at the Maison du Sport International (MSI) in Lausanne, Switzerland, the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF) gathered for its second Board of Trustees meeting of the year. The meeting confirmed THF’s great dedication to assisting refugees and displaced children via the values and practice of Taekwondo.

In his opening remarks, THF Chairman Dr. Chungwon Choue reflected on many important milestones and ongoing collaborations, including his recent meetings with IOC President Thomas Bach and President-elect Kirsty Coventry. Dr. Choue underlined the continuing alignment between the IOC, Olympic Refuge Foundation (ORF), and THF. He reminded the Board of the Foundation’s plan to keep up close cooperation with the Olympic Movement, especially with the International Sport Federations (IFs) for THF’s 10th anniversary in 2026.

The THF Chairman also shared his view that winning a medal at the highest level can truly motivate refugee youth and give them hope for a better future, similar to the inspiration provided by Zakia Khudadadi during the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

As a result, THF will provide opportunities for talented young refugee athletes from THF academies in camps and other centers to improve their skills through the THF Solidarity Program. This program will allow both able-bodied and disabled refugee athletes to participate in training camps and international Taekwondo competitions.

Seven refugee athletes from THF academies in Azraq and Za’atari camps took part in the World Taekwondo Cadet Championships in Fujairah (UAE), from which five Syrian refugee players emerged last month. Among the contestants was also a Ukrainian athlete.

The Chairman also praised THF’s increasing visibility, highlighting the success of the most inclusive 3rd Hope and Dreams Sports Festival in Jordan, which included Taekwondo, Baseball5, Basketball 3×3, Badminton, and Handball. It had also been said that weightlifting equipment would be gifted. The Board turned ahead and considered the 2026 THF 10th Anniversary and broadened the Sports Festival to include ten or more sports. The event will honor a decade of service to refugee communities and the worldwide Taekwondo Family’s efforts in employing sports to promote resilience and unity.

“Though we can do more, we need to acquire wider support and carefully plan our actions to do it well and sustainably. “This is the time to build our future,” said the THF Chairman as the THF Board approved a suggestion to boost fundraising. The Board approved two new Board members as well, and was kept informed on the current THF Strategy review. 

A documentary project was suggested to showcase the influence of THF’s work in the Azraq refugee camp, where over 500 young people have engaged in Taekwondo programs since 2016. “After nearly ten years of progress, it’s time to share our story — not just through statistics, but through the experiences and journeys of those whose lives have been impacted by Taekwondo,” remarked the THF Chairman.

The gathering wrapped up with a common goal of helping young refugees more through sports, broadening THF’s connections, and providing ongoing support for every program. The Taekwondo Family is central to this effort, and the Chairman expressed his sincere thanks for the ongoing assistance, commitment, and togetherness displayed by everyone participating.
