DAKAR, Senegal – A pilot Virtual Taekwondo Competition Day took place during the 20 April 2025 Senegal Olympic Solidarity Camp, providing young African Taekwondo in with a distinctive chance to engage with Virtual Taekwondo for the first time.

Co-organized by World Taekwondo and the African Taekwondo Union (AFTU), the event acted as a preparatory showcase in anticipation of the Olympic Esports Games 2027, enabling participants to acquire important hands-on experience with the virtual competition format.

For all athletes and coaches present, this marked their first introduction to Virtual Taekwondo. Rather than functioning as a formal competition, the event was structured as an educational and experiential platform to familiarize participants with the technology and regulations of the virtual system.

One notable aspect of the virtual format was its inclusive framework, allowing matches to occur regardless of gender, weight class, or age group. This adaptability permitted a wide array of athletes to take part, enhancing engagement, interaction, and collaborative learning among youth from diverse backgrounds.

As part of the initiative, operators and local personnel also underwent basic training on handling virtual competitions, establishing the foundation for future events throughout the continent.

Although this was merely a trial initiative, the event effectively ignited curiosity and excitement among participants. As the momentum increases towards the Olympic Esports Games 2027, this initial step signifies a hopeful beginning for the advancement of digital Taekwondo in Africa.
